Frequently Asked Questions

Fast Facts

Commonwealth Youthchoirs (CY) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization with a mission to transform the lives of young people through the power of making music together… one song at a time. Founded in 2001, CY has three choral education programs – Find Your Instrument, Keystone State Boychoir and Pennsylvania Girlchoir.

CY programs foster a profound love of singing in a nurturing, diverse community by providing outstanding choral music education and unique performance opportunities for hundreds of young people each year across the Greater Philadelphia region from ages 7 to 18.

Do children need to have prior singing experience to be accepted into CY?

No! Luckily, everyone can learn to sing.

What is expected of CY members?

CY members are expected to sing and behave professionally whenever they are representing CY. Singers are expected to arrive promptly for all rehearsals, performances and CY events, to treat all members of the CY family with respect and to have fun!

How often does CY perform?

In a typical year, CY performs many times, including small ensembles. Performances vary from full concerts to singing the National Anthem at a sporting event, to performing select repertoire with some of Philadelphia’s most elite arts organizations.

Do all the choir members travel?

Participation in CY national and international concert tours is a privilege, and is reserved for members of the Choir who are in good standing. Tour is an amazing part of the choir experience, but a singer can be a full choir member without traveling.
